The bot
The bot this week
It's real now โ well, real on paper. The book went live 109 days ago (on paper, $10,000 start) and has been rebalancing daily straight into one of the ugliest weeks crypto has had in months.
| Equity | $10,541.91 |
| Return since launch | +5.42% |
| vs. holding BTC | +13.24% |
| Max drawdown | โ4.56% |
| Funding (annualized) | +4.39% |
| Net positioning | net long ($1,374.68) |
The book is +5.42% since it went live, currently positioned net long.
Same window, holding BTC would have returned +13.24%. The book is beating buy-and-hold by roughly โ7.82% โ almost entirely by being net long into a falling tape, not by calling the top.
How it's positioned
The book runs short perps against long spot on each asset โ a defensive, low-net-exposure stance the trend filter flipped into as momentum rolled over. Drawdown so far is a trivial โ4.56%, and the funding leg is even paying a small carry (+4.39% annualized).
The honest caveat
This is 109 days of paper, not a track record. A green first week proves nothing โ the backtest already told us the edge is risk reduction, not outperformance: out-of-sample, fixed parameters, it returned about the same as buy-and-hold (Sharpe 0.93 vs 0.62) with roughly a third of the drawdown. A calm week and a violent one are both just single data points. Real capital goes in around July; until then, every number here is paper and public.
The week in crypto
Three separate regulatory agencies made concrete moves on crypto this week while the Clarity Act failed its Senate vote. The SEC's "innovation exemption" opens tokenized US stock trading on public blockchains. The CFTC sent its own crypto rulemaking to the White House for review and issued a no-action letter freeing software providers from broker registration. Meanwhile, BTC bounced off $76.5k after the Fed's first rate hike since July 2023 and is now trading above $80,800. Zcash ran 168% in a month. HYPE hit $90.92. The regulatory dam broke โ what flows through it matters more than the dam.
The SEC Moves Alone: The Innovation Exemption and What It Actually Does
The Clarity Act failed to clear the Senate, and within hours the SEC released the document the industry had been waiting for โ the "innovation exemption," positioned explicitly as a response to Congress's inability to act. The exemption lets qualifying venues trade tokenized versions of US equities on public blockchains without registering as traditional exchanges. It is not a blank check: trading caps apply, transparency requirements are mandatory, synthetic price-tracking tokens are excluded, and companies retain the right to block tokenization of their own shares.
Read that last clause again. Issuers can opt out. That's a significant constraint that most breathless coverage glossed over. The exemption creates a legal sandbox, not a free market in tokenized Apple shares. What it does do โ concretely โ is give venues like OG.com (Crypto.com's sister exchange, just cleared by the SEC for single-stock futures) a defined path rather than a legal grey zone. Kris Marszalek confirmed Crypto.com is working simultaneously with both the SEC and CFTC to offer single-stock perpetual futures in the US. That sentence would have been fiction twelve months ago.
The timing next to S&P Global's acquisition of OpenZeppelin โ the firm whose smart contracts have processed more than $37 trillion in value transfers โ is not coincidence. It's a signal of where TradFi's center of gravity is shifting. S&P Global buying the dominant smart contract security firm is the equivalent of a credit rating agency acquiring the infrastructure that will rate the next generation of financial products. OpenZeppelin continues as a standalone unit; financial terms were not disclosed.
Separately, the CFTC's no-action letter grants software providers โ crypto wallets, trading apps โ the ability to connect users to regulated derivatives markets without registering as introducing brokers. Paired with the CFTC filing its full crypto rulemaking package to the White House for review, you now have two agencies constructing a regulatory architecture in parallel, with or without Congress. Senator Gillibrand says the Clarity Act isn't dead. Industry analysts say passing it this Congress is highly unlikely. The agencies aren't waiting to find out who's right.
Banks at 23% of MiCA: The Registration Race in Europe
Banks have roughly doubled their share on ESMA's MiCA register since late June, now representing nearly one in four providers on the list. That number is the clearest evidence yet that MiCA is not being gamed or circumvented by TradFi โ it's being colonized. Traditional financial institutions looked at the compliance costs that scared off smaller crypto-native firms, did the math on the regulatory moat it creates, and moved. Binance is still in the queue, declining to address ECB intervention reports on its Greek MiCA bid while reaffirming its European commitment. Banks filing paperwork is less dramatic than an exchange scandal. It's also more consequential for the long-term structure of the market.
HYPE's Record and What Hyperliquid Is Actually Building
HYPE hit an all-time high of $90.92 after Hyperliquid launched manual borrowing, allowing users to post HYPE and Bitcoin as collateral to borrow stablecoins. This is the standard DeFi playbook โ unlock liquidity against your native token, increase protocol utility, drive price โ but Hyperliquid is executing it against a backdrop of genuine volume. Dragonfly's Haseeb Qureshi noted this week that real-world asset trading is surging on Hyperliquid, calling it evidence of crypto's broader maturation toward tokenized stocks, bonds and other RWAs. Qureshi also separately called for ending the Zcash development fund after 2028, as ZEC's rally pushed fund value above $95 million โ making continued subsidized development harder to justify publicly.
Zcash's 168% Month: Paradigm, NU7, and the Privacy Coin That Remembered It Existed
ZEC ran over 168% in a month and closed in on $1,400 after coinholders voted to preserve Bitcoin-style halvings and target the NU7 upgrade, which cuts block times to 25 seconds. Testnet activation is planned for October 6, mainnet targeting November. The 20% single-day spike came after Paradigm co-founder Matt Huang disclosed the firm had made a ZEC investment. Zcash-focused miner Fortitude simultaneously hired former Hut 8 CEO Jaime Leverton ahead of a planned public listing. One catalyst stacks on another. Whether the fundamentals support the price level is a different question โ but the narrative engine is running hot.
Bitcoin's Position: The $58k Bottom Thesis Hardens
Two separate analysts โ onchain researcher James Check and Grayscale's Zach Pandl โ independently placed Bitcoin's cycle bottom near $58,000, pointing to two completed capitulation events. The Fisher Transform indicator printed only its fourth-ever bullish cross in Bitcoin's history this week. JPMorgan added that BTC could receive more support than gold if ETF hedging eases. Corporate Bitcoin treasury firms bought just 5,900 BTC over three months as paper losses lingered โ thin conviction from the very vehicles designed to signal conviction. BTC is now trading above $80,800, recovering from a dip to $76.5k post-Fed hike. The House committee advancing the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve bill โ codifying Trump's executive order โ is political backdrop, not a near-term price catalyst.
What to Watch
- The CFTC's White House rulemaking review timeline: the first signal of how fast a formal framework could arrive, and what it covers.
- $83kโ$85k BTC resistance: the level that determines whether the Fisher Transform cross follows through or fades.
- Zcash NU7 testnet activation on October 6: the first real technical gate between the narrative and execution.
- SEC innovation exemption venue applications: which platforms file first will define who owns the tokenized equity market in the US.
Shorts
- Revolut breach. Hackers demanded $3M in Monero and separately 10,000 BTC. Revolut says it received zero direct contact from either party.

- Polymarket, South Korea. Police referred 26 users to prosecutors over $12.7M in bets. Illegal gambling, per regulators. Prediction market, per everyone else.
- NYSE on Avalanche. ICE spent a year testing Avalanche for tokenization. Ava Labs president confirmed the relationship; did not confirm a selection. There's a difference.
- Onchain malware up 420%. North Korea and Iran account for the majority. Tron, Aptos, BNB Chain used for infrastructure. Bitcoin transactions used to embed instructions.
